Freshman Seminar Sketchbook

Week 1

Assignment to draw at least six drawings from direct observation (real things only). Three of these objects should be man-made/mechanical objects. The other three should be organic/natural objects. I chose a fallen leaf, a pencil sharpener, a rubber mallet, a geometric rug, a wildflower, and a pinecone.

Week 2

Assignment was to animate each of the six objects that were drawn last week. Opportunity to be highly creative and imaginative by giving each of the objects “life”. This meant to “distort” the original drawing in a way that it now looks like it could move about, or is alive. The objective was to try and illustrate something in motion—the act of moving and I focused on being creative and imaginative.

Week 3

Assignment was to focus on one object only. A different object from any you have previously worked with. It must be something mechanical (not digital). It also must be a mechanical object that you can “take the cover off” to see how it works, the gears, the springs, the moving parts, etc. Inner workings drawn 6 different times. Focus was on a detailed, realistic representation of how these parts interact or connect with one another and shading. I chose to draw this miniature vise I use in metal-smithing.

Objective was to focus on one object only. A different object from any you have previously worked with. It must be something organic (not man-made). Objects with 3D form (examples; bones, vegetables, fruits, branches, roots, not flowers, etc.) I concentrated on practicing my shading. Goal was to make it look real.I chose to draw this old dried up grapevine I use in my studio to prop up rings during photo-sessions.

Week 5

Goal this week was to draw at least six drawings from direct observation (real things only) that you pass by each day on your way from home to class. These should be things that you normally don’t notice yet you pass by them each day without seeing them. The goal is to accurately capture a likeness of each object. I chose to sketch the boulder on the path near the university garden, the parking lot handicap sign, the dumpster in the parking lot, the Art Center building, the dirt mound in parking lot, and the pipes outside the 2D classroom.

Week 7

The goal was to draw at least six eyes in different positions, from direct observation Your goal is to accurately capture the “life” of each eye. I started out not doing very well and as I practiced my eyes seen to become more realistic. I focused on shading, dark and light.

Goal this week was to draw at least six hands in different positions, from direct observation Your goal is to accurately capture the “life” of each hand. I have not have much practice drawing hands so my goal was to practice the shape as best I could. I would call this more of a stylized hand drawing done more for fashion Design since it is very sketchy and not detailed.

Week 9

Goal was to draw at least six heads/faces in different positions, from direct observation Your goal is to accurately capture the “life” of each heads/faces.I just learned how to properly draw faces in beginning drawing. You can see I have made a big improvement in drawing. I chose to draw two imaginary males for practice that did not turn out as planned. I then drew a live model (male) and my cat. I then drew imaginary woman. I focused on getting the correct placement of the features and structure of the face in relation to ears and eyes.I also practiced another imaginary woman face and challenged myself to draw it without using eraser just to force myself to try to draw it.

Week 8

The purpose of assignment was to draw at least six noses in different positions, from direct observation The goal was to accurately capture the “life” of each nose. Once again my noses weren't great at beginning but with practice and learning better shading you can see some improvement.
